Citizens’ Academy

Learn directly from investigators, trainers, precinct commanders and officers about police procedures, what it is like to be an officer and how the Minneapolis Police Department is organized at the Citizens’ Academy.

This 10-week course offered by the Training Unit of the Minneapolis Police Department is open to people who:

· Are 18 years of age;

· Live or work in Minneapolis; or are parents, partners, or spouses of
employees of Minneapolis Police Department; and

· Pass a background check.

The background check includes coming to the department to be photographed and fingerprinted. We then will run a criminal history check and applicants could be rejected for the following reasons:

· Misdemeanor conviction, until one year has passed since the expiration
of any sentence and probation and any fines have been paid;

· Gross misdemeanor conviction, until five years have passed since the
expiration of any sentence and probation and any fines have been paid;

· Felony conviction, until ten years has passed since the expiration of any
sentence and probation and any fines have been paid;

· Documented pattern of unfitness or patterns of misconduct;

· Evidence that the candidate has misrepresented, omitted or falsified
any information to the Department.

Topics include Use of Force, Investigations, K-9 Unit, 911 Operations, Emergency Response Unit and much more.

For any questions or for information on registering for the class, contact Crime Prevention Specialist Carol Oosterhuis at (612) 673-2874 or carol.oosterhuis@ci.minneapolis.mn.us .

The Minneapolis Police Department seeks to serve people from a wide variety of backgrounds when selecting participants in its Citizen’s Academy classes. It attempts to attract candidates of different ethnicities, professions, cultural backgrounds, age groups, and neighborhoods throughout the city in the hopes of enriching class discussions and reaching out to as many communities as possible.

Applicants are requested to complete an application and will be requested to have a background check completed through the Minneapolis Police Department. For a copy of the application, please go to: http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/police/about/citizens-academy.asp or call (612) 673-2874.

There will be a Spring Citizens’ Academy in 2010. The class is planned for Thursday evenings from March 11 through May 20, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in North Minneapolis. The deadline for applications is Friday, February 19, 2010.
Apply early as there is limited space in the class.
